Weekend Fun–June 1st

Lots to See and Do!

Detroit Zoo
Meet Bulgan–The newest addition to the Detroit Zoo. A male Bactrian camel born April 28, 2012.

“Bulgan weighed 102 pounds at birth and currently stands about 3 feet tall on long, slender legs.   His coat is soft and gray but will eventually grow thick and coarse as it changes to a sandy-brown color.   A camel’s humps are limp at birth, consisting mostly of skin and hair.   When the calf reaches about 6 months old, its humps will become more defined as they fill with fat. Camels are born after a gestation period of 12 to 14 months.   A newborn calf is able to stand and walk alongside its mother in as little as 30 minutes.   ”

“With the ability to survive in temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, Bactrian camels are well-suited to Michigan’s climate.”
